10 Exciting CSS & JavaScript Page Transition Effects

Version 6 demos. This is an image slider developed with Vuejs 2 which comes with 20 cool transitions out of the box. Add the component to the template. This one has all the complements, so you can remove the ones you don't want. It also does not require a high end computer as animations are performed with CSS3 hardware acceleration. If you find yourself running into issues during installation or running the slider, please check our documentation.

Latest commit. Latest commit fed47c8 Mar 28, The effect is basically that I touch or click on an item and that then a menu drops down below. Another click or touch and the menu slides back up. Most CSS transitions are super easy to create and use. Transitions work by processing a change of a value of a CSS property. Any property that has numeric values works can be transitioned in this way.

Some examples are opacity, height and width, color values etc. You specify the CSS property a time frame and the easing mechanism which determines the how the speed of the transition is balanced. Ease in and out for example slowly ramps to a peak, then slows down as the transition ends. You can also animate height and width using CSS transitions and the logic to set this up is the same.

Then when making it visible the padding has to be added back in, but when the padding is added it the padding expands immediately, bypassing the animation transition. No good. First there are the. Note they basically set up the max-height and the transition. In closed mode max-height is set to 0 and overflow-y hidden which effectively hides all content. The slidedown class then sets the height to a specific height.

Unfortunately you have to use a specific height here and that height has to be big enough to contain the largest content you expect to show and the size should be as close as possible to the size of your actual content. Choosing the right size here is key. More on this in the next section. The next tricky thing is that you need to wrap your content — if you have any padding or margins. The wrapper effectively removes the padding from the wrapping container so that max-height only applies to the calculated height of the element.

If you have no padding or margins then your content can go directly inside of the animated container. Otherwise the container guarantees the the wrapped element is completely hidden. Finally the code to actually trigger the animations simply removes one class and replaces it with the other to invoke the effect.

This works well and easy to understand. The only downside is the max-height setting which has to be set to an explicit pixel value. The act of clicking around a multipage website can become monotonous over time. Adding page transition effects to the mix can help to kick things up a notch. With that in mind, here are 10 examples of page transitions that can add a little something special to your next project:.

Start Downloading Now! Intentional or not, this transition is reminiscent of an old CRT television being turned off. The colored background shrinks down to a single line, much like what my old TV did after a night of watching MTV when they still played music, that is. Then, the transition finishes off by reversing the effect as my TV did when I woke up the next morning.

The movement adds a cinematic quality that seems like a perfect fit for a multimedia site. Thumbnail to Full Page This is quite a unique effect, as clicking a thumbnail image transitions to a modal using that very same image as a full-screen background. The effect is a combination of CSS transitions and Angular.

Wipe it Clean A good old wipe effect has been a staple of TV and film transitions for decades. Here, we see a variation of it activated with CSS and a tiny bit of jQuery. This example from nclud shows how they built a page transition with all kinds of glitchy-goodness.

Going to the next page is just flipping that shape around to show the correct panel. Transition Transmission Page transitions have come such a long way in recent years.

More importantly, they gave me the opportunity to learn Vue. The agency behind Snipcart Spektrum wanted to start using decoupled JavaScript frameworks for small to medium sites. Before using them on client projects, however, they chose to experiment on themselves. After a few of my peers had unfruitful experiences with React, I was given the green light to prototype a few apps in Vue.

Intro to Vue.js: Animations

First, I spent time figuring out how to model and render our data appropriately. Then I dove head first into Vue transformations to apply a much-needed layer of polish on our two projects. This post digs into Vue. It is assumed that you are already comfortable with the basics of Vue. Animations and transitions are an integral part of UX and UI design.

They are, however, easy to get wrong. In complex situations like dealing with lists, they can be nearly impossible to reason about when relying on native JavaScript and CSS. We often need to rely on CSS for performance reasons, even while working in a mostly JavaScript environment, and that break in the environment can be difficult to manage.

This is where frameworks like Vue. The terms transition and animation are often used interchangeably but are actually different things. It can be confusing, as adding a class could be the trigger for a transition or an animation. Still, it is an important distinction when stepping into the world of Vue because both have very different approaches and toolboxes.

It makes things so simple, it almost feels like cheating. Vue will detect if any CSS animations or transitions are being used and will automatically toggle classes on the transitioned content, allowing for a perfectly timed transition system and complete control. This is the fifth part in a five-part series about the JavaScript framework, Vue. This is not intended to be a complete guide, but rather an overview of the basics to get you up and running so you can get to know Vue.

Vuejs transition animation not working on leave

If you come from React, the concept behind the transition component will be familiar to you, because it works similarly to ReactCSSTransitionGroup in relationship to lifecycle hooks, but it has some notable differences that make nerds like me excited.

Transitioning state is out of the scope of this article, but it is possible. I could probably be convinced to write that article too, once I take a long nap. A transition basically works by interpolating the values from state to another. We can do great things with them, but they are rather simple.

Here, to there, and back again. Animations are a bit different in that you can make multiple states occur within one declaration. You can even chain many animations with delays for really complex movement. In terms of tools, both are useful. Think of transitions as a saw and animations as a powersaw. Sometimes you just need to saw one thing and it would be silly to go out and buy really expensive equipment.

For other more robust projects, it makes more sense to make the powersaw investment. The modal shows and hides on a click of a button. Based on the previous sections, we already know that we might: make a Vue instance with a button, make a child component from that instance, set the data on the state so that it toggles some sort of boolean and add an event handler to show and hide this child component. We could use v-if or v-show to toggle the visibility.

We might even use a slot to pass the button toggle into the modal as well. See the Pen by Sarah Drasner. This will give us a v- prefix for some transition hooks we can use in our CSS. This is normal CSS, you can pass in cubic-beziers for eases, delays, or specify other properties to transition. Truthfully, this would also work just as well if you placed the transition in these classes on the component classes themselves as a default. The one reason I do use it on the enter-active and leave-active classes is that I can reuse the same transition for other elements as well, and not run around the codebase applying the same default CSS to each instance.

This works and looks fine for something like opacity. I find it makes the animation look more… classy har har. These will be the first and last positions of the animation, the initial state as it mounts, the end state as it unmounts. You may think you need to set opacity: 1 on. CSS transitions and animations will always use the default state unless told otherwise. This article was peer reviewed by Dan Prince and Chris Perry.

The slideshow — also known as the image carousel, the slider, or the rotating banner — is a commonly requested tutorial among people who are learning JavaScript. The main benefits of not using a library for your slideshow are that your page performs better — due to less code — and you can use the slideshow anywhere without worrying about loading any extra files.

This tutorial assumes you know some JavaScript, including functions, click events, and style changes. Before looking at the CSS, remember you might need to change the class and id names to avoid conflicts in your own sites. The names in this article were picked to be short and readable. Now, you can add other styles to change how the slideshow looks. I used the following for this demo:. The JavaScript has one job: hide the current slide and show the next one.

To accomplish this, we just have to change the classes of the slides in question. Before using a slideshow, please think carefully about its role on your page. According to research at the University of Notre Dameonly 1. This example shows how it can be dangerous to depend on a slideshow for critical content.

This is especially a problem with big homepage slideshows. Tweet This. WiderFunnel, a conversion optimization firm, tested the effectiveness of slideshows and came to the following conclusion:. We have tested rotating offers many times and have found it to be a poor way of presenting home page content.

A slideshow can increase loading times and data usage on mobile devices in addition to making controls tricky. So, given the potential problems a slideshow can introduce, when might be a good time to use one? Here are some suggestions. In this scenario, if the user only sees one slide, nothing major would be lost. For example, maybe you want to show photos of a resort, a museum, an event, or a product line in a slideshow, but you also have a full photo gallery or product collection elsewhere in an easy-to-reach part of your site.

Then it would be fine to use a slideshow. If you or your clients!
